The Cliffs of Dover and Dover Castle

This picturesque view is located on the southeastern end of the island.

For the longest time, the Cliffs of Dover would have greeted many of travelers coming to Britain.

Through the island's history, numerous fortresses have stood guard at the 'front door' of Britain. From the Roman Era to the Modern Era, this elevated position has served in the island's martial defenses.

 

 

 

What can be seen of Dover Castle is the result of several stages of building and reconstruction.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Right of the Saxon church of St. Mary-in-Castro is a dilapidated Roman pharos. This imperial lighthouse was part of a defense system called the Saxon Shore.

According to Jonathan Coad writing on behalf of the English Heritage, this Saxon Shore fort most likely came into existence when the Roman developed the port of Dover in second century A.D. one of the remaining towers from Roman times.

 

 

From here, journey west to the Medway Valley where Rochester Castle guards the river crossing.
