St. Albans and the Roman City of Verulamium

St. Albans is the last stop in the tour of lower Britain. During the Roman occupation, St. Albans or Verulamium, as it was called at that time, was the third largest city in the British provinces.

It is alleged that Bishop Germanus of Auxerre traveled here in 429 to commemorate the martyr, St. Albans, and to preach the orthodoxy against the Pelagian heresy spreading on the island.

Here is a portrait of St. Albans. History states that Albans, an ex-soldier for Rome, shelter a Christian during the Roman persecution. When officials came to arrest the hiding Christian, Albans stated that he was the Christian and was executed in place of the Christian he was hiding.

Exquisite craftsmanship took on many forms while Rome remained in Britain. There are numerous mosaics and other artwork recovered from excavating in Verulamium. See some of the examples below.
